Why We Started Writing About Money in Kenya
Sparksforge was built on a straightforward premise: Kenyan readers deserve finance content as rigorous as anything published in London or New York, anchored in the realities of East Africa.
What Sparksforge is and who it serves
Sparksforge is a finance blog founded in Mombasa in 2019. We write for employed Kenyans, self-employed professionals, and small-business owners across the country who are trying to make sound decisions with their money but find most available content either too generic or too foreign. Our core subjects are personal savings and investment, NSE equity analysis, Kenyan fixed-income instruments — Treasury bills, Treasury bonds, and infrastructure bonds — SACCO and cooperative finance, and small-business cash-flow management. We also publish guides on topics such as M-Pesa savings products, mobile lending costs, and the practical differences between regulated unit trusts and informal investment groups. Each article is grounded in publicly available Kenyan data: CBK releases, NSE disclosures, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics figures, and where relevant, direct comparisons of product terms published by licensed financial institutions. Our readers range from recent university graduates opening their first savings account to business owners managing a KSh 5 million annual turnover who want to improve their treasury management. We write for both, adjusting depth accordingly.
How the editorial team works — and what we do not do
The Sparksforge editorial team is small by design. Our core is two full-time finance writers supported by a data researcher and an editor who reviews every piece before publication. This structure keeps our output manageable and our quality consistent — we publish fewer than twenty articles per month because we prioritize accuracy over volume. Our process begins with a question drawn from reader feedback, news events, or gaps we identify in existing Kenyan financial coverage. We gather primary data, build any necessary models in a spreadsheet, and draft the article around findings rather than around a predetermined conclusion. We link to every source. We state our assumptions. When a calculation depends on a variable that readers control — such as their tax bracket or investment horizon — we present a range rather than a single answer. There are clear limits to what we provide. Sparksforge is editorial content, not licensed financial advice. We do not manage investments on behalf of readers, sell financial products, or act as intermediaries for any institution we cover. Our analysis reflects conditions at the time of writing; financial markets and regulatory rules change, and readers should verify current rates and terms before acting. We do not cover cryptocurrency speculation or offshore investment schemes. Our scope is regulated Kenyan financial instruments and the institutions that offer them.
